On Saturday, 13 August, at Acworth Beach in Cabule Park, aspiring cadets attended our Welcome Aboard Picnic. It was an opportunity for returning cadets to get acquainted with the fresh faces that will be attending the unit as well as an opportunity for our NS1's and their families to get to know the SNSI and NSI. Those who attended enjoyed the food, beach, and fun. We appreciate all who participated and made this event possible. This unit looks forward to the rising cadets that will be the future leaders of North Cobb-Harrison's NJROTC.
Cadet Staff and Officers conducted the unit's Freshman Orientation last week for some of our cadets who will be part of the unit this coming Fall. The purpose of the orientation was to give incoming freshman a basic understanding of what is to come this school year. Students in attendance were indoctrinated on numerous subject matters such as basic drill, core knowledge, and physical fitness. Special thanks to the Booster Organization parents who treated the new freshman to grilled burgers and hot dogs at the conclusion of the orientation. Thanks to all of the staff and officers who contributed to the overall success of this year's Freshman Orientation.
Cadets from the North Cobb-Harrison NJROTC unit took time out of their summer break to take on the challenge of this year’s BLT (Basic Leadership Training) at Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina. The BLT was conducted July 5th-8th. 37 cadets overcame their fears by conquering obstacles such as the Confidence Course, Gas Chamber, and by repelling off the island’s legendary 50 foot Repel Tower. To make the trip even more memorable for cadets, the entire visit was led by Drill Instructor Sergeant Zachery Willms (pictured right), 2d Battalion, Company “G”. DI Sergeant Willms’ unyielding dedication to duty and professionalism contributed greatly to the overall success of this year’s BLT. In addition, special thanks are in order for the Booster Organization members and parents who accompanied 1stSgt during the visit.
Congratulations are in order for our 2016 Leadership Academy Graduates. Cadets selected were pushed to their limits last week at the Riverside Military Academy located in Gainesville, Georgia. Cadets were challenged physically, academically, and mentally over a seven day period, while reinforcing their leadership knowledge, skills, and abilities. Upon completion of the course, cadets were awarded the coveted “Silver Cord” distinguishing them as the elite leaders of the North Cobb-Harrison Navy JROTC program. Job well done! Cadets from the unit were invited to perform Color Guard duties at a recent Kennesaw City Council Meeting. At the pleasure of the Mayor, the Color Guard members were able to spend a few moments to serve as "Mayor for a Minute". Special thanks to the support of our Booster Org. President; Kim Pritchard. The North Cobb - Harrison NJROTC Brain Brawl team defended their two-time national championship status and won their third consecutive Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Brain Brawl National Championship April 30.
The Champion North Cobb – Harrison NJROTC Brain Brawl Team includes Alex Birchler, North Cobb; Andrew Kelly, Harrison; Tomas King, North Cobb; Dawson Bowman, North Cobb; and Jackson Fowler, North Cobb. By clinching their third consecutive National Championship, the team broke a championship record. The competition was held at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. and included 23 other teams from all around the country. In order to qualify for the National Championship, teams must place in the top 3 in their region. In addition to placing first in team competition, Alex Birchler, who is the team captain and a senior, placed 1st in the Individual “Brawl Stars” competition for the second consecutive year.
Brain Brawl is a college bowl styled academic competition, which includes questions on subjects ranging from naval history, oceanography, astronomy, navigation, geography, science, math, sports, and entertainment. It required months of preparation and practice, which resulted in their record-breaking victory.
In addition to the competition, the cadets toured the U.S. Naval Academy campus, viewed a parade of more 4,000 midshipmen, ate lunch in historic King Hall, and spoke with midshipmen about the admissions process and academy life. Congratulations to the North Cobb – Harrison NJROTC Brain Brawl National Champions!
