Freshman Orientation 2019

During the week of Freshman Orientation these cadets learned how the North Cobb- Harrison Unit does their weekly activities and procedures. The week consisted of drill, knowledge, and physical fitness. Each Team and Department also gave a short brief on how they do things in their designated areas. On their final day the rising cadets took a 50 question knowledge test and had a drill knockout, top 3 placements received goodies. This years turn out for Freshman Orientation was the biggest and best. A special thank you to the Instructors, Booster Club, and Cadet Staff for making this possible.

Congratulations 2019 Leadership Academy Graduates!

Saturday Morning at Riverside Military Academy cadets Gisselle Miranda, Blake Ritter, Louis Dorsinvil and Ethan Fowler graduated from Leadership Academy as first time attendees and cadets Makayla Groves and Jacob Suttles received their Cadre Cords. That week had pushed them to their limits and helped them develop leadership skills in all aspects such as Drill, Athletics, and Academics. They were mentally and physically exhausted by the end of the week but learned useful knowledge. Cadets Miranda and Fowler were Platoon Commanders for their platoons, cadet Ritter was Guidon and cadet Dorsinvil was 2nd squad leader, his platoon also received Honor Platoon on graduation day.  Cadet Suttles was a part of the Color Guard and cadet Groves was Alpha Company Commander. Amazing Job cadets.

Cadets Attend Georgia Orienteering Advanced Training Camp

Four cadets on the Orienteering Team were sent to the Georgia Orienteering Advanced Training Camp at Hard Labor Creek Park in Rutledge, GA for the first time in North Cobb- Harrison NJROTC history. From June 2-7 John Huffman, Joseph Prinzi, Matheus Lago, and Ethan McKinster learned tips and tricks about orienteering and were able to improve their skills and come back with more knowledge to share with the Orienteering team. G.O.A.T Camp was a week that was mentally and physically straining. On their first day they had to run a 5k in 28 minutes or  less and pass an Academic Test with an 80 or higher. Their practices consisted of rigorous courses, training exercises, and using maps that were blanked out only showing the contour lines and their control points. These maps are considered an equivalent to a red course, which is the highest course offered in orienteering. On their final day they had to run a designated orienteering course based on the platoon they were assigned due to their performance at camp. All cadets did amazingly. Matheus Lago finished in First place on the green course with a total of 83  minutes. Cadet Prinzi placed first on " Memory-O Course" and the "Follow John Course." Lastly cadet Huffman placed firston the "Postage Stamp Course." Although it was a challenging week they were able to socialize, acquire new skills, and knowledge. Way to make us proud cadets!

Congratulations to NS1 c/SN Anderson, Jaylen and NS3 c/ LCDR Groves, Makayla for being awarded as the Cadets of the Quarter for the third six weeks of the 2019 school year. These cadets have displayed superior military bearing, academic achievement, participation in community service events, conduct, and they have shown esprit de corps throughout these six weeks.

The New Generation!!!

The North Cobb-Harrison NS1's & 2's (1st & 2nd year) Cadets competed Saturday, 20 April at the Powder Springs NS1/2 Fun Meet. Hosted by McEachern High School, the newly trained drill cadets, led by upperclassman, weathered the rain and cold, to finish strong in the units last drill event for the season. Cadets participated in all events typically conducted at a regular sanctioned meet with the exception of Academic Testing, push ups/sit ups, and a Personnel Inspection. Such events were replaced by the "dizzy izzy", the "ammo can" relay, and the "sea bag" relay just to name a few. In spite of the weather, the cadets finished 2nd Overall placing 1st in Armed Basic, Armed Exhibition and Tug-o-war. Overall, the cadets had a great time.

North Cobb – Harrison NJROTC Academic Brain Brawlers Win Region/ State Championship

Pictured left to right: Team 1- Camilla Flores, Elly Powell, Elizabeth Magneson, Paul King, Jackson Fowler, Team 2- Jonathan Shepherd, Ben King, Miriam King, Ethan Williams, and Chase Cumming.

In a highly spirited academic competition held at Hillgrove High School, Saturday March 16, 2019, our academic brain brawl teams were highly successful. Sweeping the field of 23 other teams that participated, our 5 time consecutive National Champion team are NJROTC Area 12 Champions, again this year. Our second team, finishing 3rd, was just as decisive in their success and also qualify for NJROTC National Academic Brain Brawl Invitational Championship that will be held at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University(ERAU), Daytona Beach, Fl campus on April 20, 2019.

Our level of success can be directly attributed to commitment to the team by all members and lots and lots of practice. Brain Brawl is similar to the popular TV show a Jeopardy, where instead of individuals competing, there are 4 teams of 5 students answering questions from history, math, science, current events, and the naval JROTC curriculum.

The Drill Team Qualifies for "Navy Nationals" for the 2nd Straight Year. The North Cobb-Harrison NJROTC Drill Team competed Saturday, 2 March in Douglas, GA. for the Area-12 Championship. The competition was very stiff but the team was able to secure a spot at nationals by placing 3rd overall out of 16 high schools. Although the team did not finish as expected, being able to travel to Pensacola Florida in April to represent the Area definitely made up for it. The team was able to get a boost in overall placement thanks to the performance of our Academic Team, who placed 2nd overall, and our Athletics Team that placed 1st in the 8 by 220 relay. Cadets competed strong but know that the competition at nationals will be even stronger. Great job team and good luck at Navy Nationals!

Orienteering Team Places 13th at Navy Nationals in Santa Clarita, California

Cadets competing at this year's Navy National Orienteering Championship are listed. Standing from left to right Jacob Chmelecki, Matheus Lago, Francisco Combes (Team Commander), Paul King, Zachary Boyer, Ethan Fowler, Joseph Prinzi, and 1stSgt Mike Dickerson (NSI). Kneeling from left to right; Corey Tran, Rachel Mejias, Gisselle Miranda, and John Huffman.

The North Cobb-Harrison Orienteering Team competed in the Navy National Orienteering Championship 15 – 17 February 2019. The actual competition took place at the legendary Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park located in Agua Dulce, California, roughly thirty miles north of Los Angeles. The area has been used in the filming of dozens of movies and television productions to include Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, and Holes, just to name a few. After a wet and rainy model course, provided by the Los Angles Orienteering Club on that Friday, competition officially began Saturday morning, kicking off a rigorous two day competition. Under crisp blue skies, the course however proved to be by far the most challenging course the team has ever faced. The team slipped and grinded their way through the most difficult, rocky, and mountainous terrain they had ever encountered. Sunday’s course greeted the runners with another clear and sunny start, but ended shortly after windy and rainy conditions moved in. After two days of competition, accompanied by a variety of mixed weather conditions, the team placed 13th overall out of 29 Navy JROTC units from all over the nation. During the second day of competition, team commander Cadet Francisco “Puffy” Combes, completed the Varsity course just under an hour at 54 minutes, making him the tenth best runner in the nation! He's pictured above with the NSI from Troy High, (host high school out of California) receiving a medal for his achievement. This is the first time the Orienteering team competed at the national level and they did so with pride and determination. So, congratulations team for qualifying and representing the unit at this year’s Navy Nationals Orienteering Championship. This has been a year they will never forget.

Cadets Role Play During Cobb County Mass Casualty Exercise at Sun Trust Stadium

The North Cobb-Harrison cadets were used as role players at Sun Trust Park Tuesday, 6 November 2018. Cobb County Police, Sheriff’s Department, and Emergency Response teams simulated emergency situations at the stadium during their annual training. Some of the cadets were painted with make up to resemble injuries such as burns, lacerations, and gunshot wounds, and would be treated (notionally) during multiple scenarios. The cadets were able to be exposed to and participate in scenarios that could occur in real life. Their adrenaline was pumping and their hearts were racing. The cadets had an exciting experience.  In addition, they were able to relax in two of the VIP box suits throughout the evening, giving way to a beautiful view of the New Atlanta Braves Stadium.
